Description
A Vintage Getzen 80 stencil horn made for Beacon in Boston Mass!!! This horn has a NEW Satin Brass and Nickel finish!!! This is a great trumpet and a top-quality instrument made by one of the best music names in the world. Made by Getzen, this is a model 80 Deluxe trumpet clone made for Beacon Music Stores in Boston Mass. The 80 Deluxe was a design that put emphasis on looks as well as a low pro playing trumpet. These horns are good looking and play very well also! The 80 and 90 models were the forerunners of the later 900 Eterna models. The 80 and 90 series spawned the Super Deluxe model that was identical except for the copper trim and thinner bell tube that required a tone ring just to stiffen it. I have played and collected both and prefer the 80 and 90 to the Super Deluxe. The 80 has a slightly thicker walled bell tube with a standard rolled wire rim. Their tone is warmer and mellower than the Super but still much brighter than the new horns of today. They also slot better and have the ability to soar over almost any section. The serial number on this one is 81743, and since Getzen had a fire that destroyed the records of their horns before 1963, this should date the horn to about 1960. The body has a beautiful NEW RAW Satin brass and nickel finish with some very small dings and a few remnant marks from dents that were removed. The outer slide tubes are all nickel as well as the lead pipe. The slides are polished brass with standard Getzen pulls. The caps are polished brass and have the standard knurled look. The buttons are the standard old Getzen bolt look. Getzen trumpets are always in demand since they always have powerful open tones and are free blowing. This one is no exception as I have played this horn while I was doing the work on it to remove a few dings and do the finish (Melanie said I sound great on this horn, lol, as always) on the body and slides. The horn shows a few small dings that are hard to spot from a few feet away. After I played it, I fixed some dents and dings and removed the old lacquer. I then chem. cleaned the horn and bright dipped the horn to a bright brass and nickel. I DO NOT buff my horns when refinishing them to preserve the playing characteristics. With a thin tube you cannot take off metal and keep the horn playing nice! I then shot the bead blast finish (glass for a true smooth satin look) and polished the slides and caps. The horn was re-assembled and new felts, corks, and springs were installed. This Getzen plays full and with ease in all registers. It slots as well as any older pro model and has a good bright tone. Getzen designed it to be as good as any pro horn and it lives up to that easily! It's in great mechanical condition - all the tuning slides work smoothly, including the first and third which are usually frozen and require some kind of repair. The valves work freely and smoothly and return back into place with ease. The valves have new felts on the inside to align them and also on the tops. The valves have very little wear and they are fast and have good seal. You have to look at the design, they are the old pro style with bottom springs. They are really fantastic to see and play with. Getzen has long been known for their superior valves! There are no dents in any of the tubing and as we said earlier, just a few very small dings and remnants from 48+ years of normal wear that we felt were too small to remove. The bell is in very good shape and is polished inside the flair. The engraving says: Beacon, Boston Mass. The slides are polished and pull easily and there are no missing pull tabs. Cosmetically the horn has a few imperfections that show up close, but from 5 feet away it looks new! Looks wise, the horn still rates a solid 9 on a 10 scale. I have lit the horn on the close ups to try to show any imperfections! The horn is ready to play, look, and sound great! The trumpet comes with the original Getzen mouthpiece, which is a great playing medium width and large deep cup piece. The case was damaged beyond repair and I am not including one with the horn. This is your chance – there are lots of trumpets made in China that play terribly and lots of new American horns that are far overpriced. Why buy a junk horn for $149.00 or more or spend upwards of $1000 for a new pro trumpet (the 900 is still their pro model and goes for $1200-1700) when you can pick this up for a lot less than that? Take a look...it’s a great horn for a student, advanced player, comeback player, or Getzen collector. Winning Bidder pays shipping of $15.00 (Insured).
