Description
This is a beautiful, handcrafted horn in superb condition. This Lewis Geyer model is truly a world-class horn - - the same model played by members of the Chicago Symphony, and other top-flight hornists worldwide. The current wait for a new Lewis horn was over 2-years the last time I spoke with Steve Lewis. New Lewis horns are reportedly going for over $10,000. Steve Lewis made this horn in 1983 for Jonathan Ring (now a member of the San Francisco Symphony). I have owned the horn since 1989, and have kept it in great shape. It only has a couple of minor dings, which have no effect on how the horn plays. The horn has been professionally played for it's entire existence. The valves are in fantastic condition, with the compression one would expect of a new horn. All of the slides function perfectly, and are tight and smooth. The horn has a detachable bell, and comes with a rather old, but still very functional Marcus Bona flight case/backpack. This is an great playing horn. It is extremely open, free-blowing and even from top to bottom. The sound is rich, full and centered, with a warmth and core that I have not found on any other instrument. The sound projects easily to the back of any hall, yet is equally good blending with winds and strings in quiet passages - - a superb instrument for both orchestral and chamber settings. The high range is exceptional, as are the low and middle ranges. Intonation is very even, and the response is quick and easy. Legatos are wonderful, and the tone is extremely consistent between the F and Bb sides of the horn. The only reason I am selling this horn - - which has served me so well for years - - is that I recently acquired a similar horn made by Wes Hatch, and I simply don't need two Geyer model horns at this point in my career.
