For your consideration I offer this rare Holton Model 51-LB B-flat trumpet, marked "Holton / 51-LB / Elkhorn, Wis. / U.S.A." Serial number 299198 indicates production in 1957. It retains about about 95% of its original lacquer finish, with small areas of lacquer loss on the valve casings, mouthpipe, 2nd crook, and on the bell where some dents were removed. The outer valve slide tubes, mouthpipe, valve caps, buttons and balusters are nickle-silver; the crooks, receiver, and valve casings are yellow brass. The bell tail and throat are copper, and the flare is yellow brass, giving the instrument a rich, warm tone that can be pushed to a brighter edge when required. The bore size is indicated as .465" in Holton's promotional literature, but this horn mics out at .462". I can't account for the discrepancy; perhaps Holton varied the bore size on these over the years of production. Bell diameter is 4-7/8". There are a few tiny dings here and there, and dents have been removed from the bell flare and 2nd crook. There are a few scratches, as one can expect on a 51-year-old horn. The slides all pull properly and all moving parts are free. Everything works the way it is supposed to. Th valves are quite tight with minimal blow-by, and are fast, smooth, and reliable. Overall, this horn is in really good shape. Here is what Holton said about the Model 51-LB: "Developed by Holton for professionals who demand the ultimate in large bore power, brilliance and response, this trumpet has met with enthusiastic praise wherever it has appeared. With all of its power house capacity, it retains the fine tonal coloring, exceptional flexibility, fine intonation, and easy blowing qualities that characterize Holton trumpets. Large Bore (0.465). Bb only." It is my understanding that Bud Herseth played this model for a while. The playing qualities are excellent. It has a warm, complex tone with just enough edge to make it ring. It can be pushed into a bit of edge when appropriate. The intonation and flexibility are very good and the horn seems to project well. Overall a very fine instrument. I prefer medium-bore instruments for most of my playing situations, so I have decided to let this one go to someone who is more at home with large-bore horns. Included is the original outfit with the Holton "Streamliner" case in very good condition, Holton 67 mouthpiece, case keys, hang tag, lyre, and valve wiper rod; also includes a Giardinelli 3C mouthpiece with flaking plating. The instrument has been disassembled, cleaned, and lubed. It is ready for you to take it to the gig. It will be carefully packed to protect it during shipping.
